Workshops take place at designermakers21, Diss and St Mary’s Church, Winfarthing.
All activities are FREE, however, for some, booking may be required. Please check below for details of all sessions. Workshops will take place in ground floor and first floor spaces, access is via stairs only to the first floor. Contact us on 01379 640 764 with any access inquiries.
Creative Sessions at designermakers21, Diss, IP22 4LB
Anglo-Saxon inspired bead making, drop-in workshop 10am-4pm
Join glass artist Steph Parmee, and make your own beads using fimo clay, inspired by the beautiful glass beads made by the Anglo-Saxons.

Suitable for all the family, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
Create an Anglo-Saxon stylized animal or figure in clay – 3 hr workshop
Join ceramicist Elaine Humpleby, to create a stylised animal or figure in clay. We will be taking inspiration from Anglo Saxon finds: animal and bird designs in their jewellery, the Spong man figurine and the geometric and rhythmic patterns they used.
Try your hand at using natural textures from around Winfarthing, handmade stamps and carving to add intricate detail.
Your creation will be fired by Elaine using natural oxides, ready to collect a few weeks later.

Experience Anglo-Saxon Weaving: Create a Community Cloth, drop-in workshop 10am-4pm
Join weaver Kim Morgan, and take part in a hands-on weaving experience inspired by Anglo-Saxon England. Working together on a communal loom, we will create a cloth using natural fibres that would have been familiar to Anglo-Saxon weavers: wool, linen and hemp.
Explore weaving techniques, handle natural fibres, and discover how textiles were made as a shared household activity in the early medieval period.

Create a mosaic inspired by the Winfarthing pendant, drop-in workshops
Join mosaic artist Joy Holden, and try your hand at creating a mosaic inspired by the significant gold & garnet pendant discovered in the Winfarthing finds. We will be cutting glass, using tweezers, adhesive, grout to make our pendants.
FREE, workshops 10am-11.30am, 12-1.30pm and 2-3.30pm. Limited places, book with Joy on the day at designermakers21.

Make your own Anglo-Saxon inspired clay ‘cresset’ lamp, drop-in workshop 10am-3pm
Join potter Kate Welton from designermakers21 to create your own Anglo-Saxon inspired ‘cresset’ (lamp). Cressets helped to bring light to dark houses, and were often made from clay, stone or even a lump of chalk.
Using the ‘pinch pot’ technique, we will form our clay cressets, add pattern and texture using stamps/carving to create designs inspired by Anglo Saxon pottery found locally. Together, we will create beautiful cressets to bring light in the depth of winter!
Your cresset will be fired by Kate in her kiln at designermakers21, ready to collect a few weeks later.

Anglo-Saxon Inspired Embroidery, drop-in workshop 10am-3pm
Join textile artist Marie Mallen from designermakers21, and try your hand at some Anglo-Saxon inspired embroidery.
As seen in the grave goods of the Winfarthing hoard, women could own land and be artisans in the Anglo Saxon period. In particular, English embroidered work known as ‘Opus Anglicanum’ was greatly prized and produced the iconic Bayeux Tapestry at the end of this period.
Each person will be given a small square of woollen blanket to embroider a sampler, which can be cut out to make a brooch if so desired. Simple chain and satin stitch will be used in woollen darning thread (nearest affordable modern equivalent). Easy to embroider images taken from Anglo-Saxon artefacts will be available for inspiration.
