Heritage Open Days | 18th -20th September

Celebrate Heritage Making at designermakers21 as part of the national Heritage Open Days

21 St. Nicholas Street, Diss, Norfolk, IP22 4LB

An Exhibition of Heritage Crafts in the heart of the Heritage Triangle in Diss. Showcasing brush making, paper making, lithographic printing all within the former ironmongers at 21 St Nicholas Street. Free workshops and demonstrations.

Diss, as an important market town, has always been the centre of both local commerce and manufacturing. We tend to forget how self-contained a town like Diss was- supported by specialist crops and industries- to supply the needs of local people.

The pattern of the streets, still evident today, show how livestock was brought to auction, sold and processed for meat and leather, all within walking distance of the town centre.

Crops were grown to serve specialist manufacturing needs and brought in from the neighbouring fens supported by institutions such as the Corn Hall and factories like the Diss Brush Company. But there were a host of small businesses supplying everyday needs from a new hearth for the fireplace to a new broom for the yard; from paper to formally printed documents.

At 21 St Nicholas Street, in the building that was for many years the location of Albrights the ironmongers, there will be an exhibition of the history of the building and demonstrations of bisom (brush) making using materials cropped from the nearby heaths, and of paper making with samples of stone lithography used to print commercial documents. Come and have a go at making and seeing how the local economy was largely self-sufficient not that long ago.

‘Where The Wild Hearts Are’ Exhibition | 4th – 25th October 2025

‘Where The Wild Hearts Are’

An exhibition of photographical work from two Norfolk artists, Kally Davidson and Fay Jones.

Both with an eye for the subtle and the sublime, these two recorders of the curiously cordate have banded together to bring you their most heartfelt findings.

The wild hearts come, some in fleeting moments, their pulse strong but brief, marking temporal changes, and some steadily, with their small yet sturdy beats, witness to the longer flows of time.

With eyes wide open you too can receive love from the wild hearts.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 4th – Saturday 25th September 2025.

Preview evening Friday 3rd October 6:45-9pm, everybody welcome

TEENAGE KICKS – An exhibition of portraits by Richard Scoulding | 24th April – 10th May 2025

TEENAGE KICKS – An exhibition of portraits by Richard Scoulding, celebrating the performers and fans of the music he fell in love with as a teenager in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s.

Visit the exhibition in the Upstairs Gallery at designermakers21 24th April to 10th May, open Thursday-Saturday 10am-5pm.

“In the summer of 2023 I put a call out on Social Media asking if any of my UK followers were Punks in the late 1970’s or Psychobillys in the early 1980’s. This exhibition was inspired by the photographs that I was sent.

I left Diss High School in 1982 with an Art O’level. In 1995 I took evening classes in Norwich to gain an Art A’level qualification. That is as far as my formal art education went. Between leaving school in 1982 and the summer of 2018, aside from those A’level classes, I didn’t paint or draw at all.

In 2018 I decided to give painting a try and since then I’ve not stopped. I paint portraits, so far mostly of musicians and sports personalities.

I have handled commissions and have sold work around the UK, the USA, Australia & Europe.”

Showcase Exhibition | February – April 2025

We are delighted to welcome three local artists in the Showcase for February, March and April.

Becky Whatley – Multi-talented, Becky is showing her fabulous pictures, which she creates with precision pyrography, and oil paint to finish. Becky also creates rather wonderful felted creatures.

Cathie Fiddling – Cathie makes attractive mosaics using broken crockery. Adding extra interest, and a little bit of humour with lettering in a very charming fashion.

Keri Lowe (Fibre and earth Studios) – Keri is a potter and sculptor. She hand builds with coils, slabs, and throws on the wheel. Her work is decorated using sgraffito. All are beautiful pieces of work, often functional, sometimes sculptural, with a focus on surface decoration.
