Make a Bronze Sculpture

28th July, 4th and 11th August

An exciting opportunity to experience the design process; take an idea from research, throught planning and modeling, to exhibition. Work with artists from designermakers21 and The Portable Foundry Project, using 'lost wax' casting techniques practiced across the world for thousands of years. Your work will be exhibited in an exhibition: 'Discovering Lost Wax', at designermakers21, running in parallel to Lawrence Edwards' exhibition at The Corn Hall in Diss.

28th July: Workshop one, 11am to 4pm

Inspired by the past: drawing, writing and clay workshop

In the first workshop participants will be introduced the exciting world of Asante Proverbial Gold Weights! Using images and research from the British Museum collection of Asante Gold Weights as inspiration, you will devise a 'Proverb for Today' before creating your own clay models - animals/objects/people. These will be remodelled in wax during the next workshop.

4th August: Workshop two, 11am to 4pm

Wax Models and Introduction to Investment Casting

In this workshop, using your clay sculpture as inspiration, you will create a small wax model for casting. You will learn how to attach a wax sprue system to you sculpture with hot knives. The final part of the day will be an introduction to the process of 'investing', the first stage in the process of Italian lost wax casting; building up layers of plaster, ceramic sands and Ludo. The sculpture will be encased in an 'investment mould'.

11th August: Workshop three, from 10am (drop in)

Bronze Pour Day

After a week in the kiln, the investment moulds will be ready to cast and the Portable Foundry will be on site pouring bronze! You will see a bronze pour and your own sculptures being cast. We will be opening these moulds during the day so everybody can see the results of their casting.

The furnace will be kindled from 10am. Bronze pours will begin at midday and continue at regular intervals.

Sculptures will be exhibited in Discovering Lost Wax at designermakers21 from the 17th August to 1st September.

Cost of project - £95 (including all materials)

Participants must be 16+ years old
